|Department Spotlight: Bulk Department|
by Jon Megas-Russell
Our Bulk Department is a hidden secret at the Co-op and there's no better time to talk about it than in honor of Earth Day. As I talked with Bronwyn, David, Sue, and Dante from Bulk about why it is great for the planet and your family, they shared a few reasons. First, you can obtain any quantity of food that you need, cutting down on food waste and allowing you to save money.
Second, the freshness of the food is excellent—they are constantly rotating product and ensuring the bins and department are clean. Third, and one of the most important, is minimizing packaging waste. In fact you can bring your own jars and fill them with any bulk item. Not only are you eliminating plastic and paper bags from your purchase, but by bringing your own jars you can participate in our Bag a Bean program. The Bag a Bean program rewards you with a fava bean (worth 5 cents) for every jar or bag you bring in and this bean can be used to donate to a local organization.
One of Bronwyn, David, Sue, and Dante's favorite parts of their job is assisting customers. Whether it be “where are the chia seeds,” “how do I label my own container,” “what is the origin of this product,” or “how do I prepare this grain” they love answering every question! Speaking of preparation and recipes, we always try and have out lots of information and recipes on each section of the department. If you do not see the preparation or recipe instructions please ask, we can get them to you whether it be in person, over email or mail.
One of the other big themes that Bronwyn and David talked about in the Bulk Department was community. Whether it be new Shareholders or long time Shareholders they all love to sit in the Bulk window and pack food. It has been said that they feel like they are doing something important and something that is good for the earth. Not to mention they get to help friends and neighbors with questions.
Next time you are in the store please stop and chat with anyone on the Bulk team, they would love to help you save money and eat great food!
